THE PROBLEM

Local SEO for small business: the problem in the customer's words

Local SEO for small business is the work that helps customers find you in your town. It is not a subscription that buys rankings. It is a Google Business Profile, useful pages, reviews, and mentions, put right in an order you can watch.

Owners who call us say some version of this. "Yes, we have a website. We don't get any business from it… I get 1-5 of these emails a day," wrote a general contractor. An HVAC owner posted "Why am I getting no calls?" and got 108 replies: reviews matter most, get a Google profile yesterday, SEO is a giant scam.

The money is real. "It's been 5 months, not a single call… I've given you thousands of dollars to try." "$1750 a month for 2 pages of content." "Signed up with an SEO company, it's been a nightmare." Then the service-area businesses stuck in Google's video-verification loop, one showing "Permanently closed".

Four things cause that. A profile that is incomplete, or categorised too broadly, when it should say what you actually do. No page for the service people search. A site that is slow or heavy on a phone. Or a provider selling reports instead of work. Fixing those is not clever. It is done, or it is not.

OUTCOMES

How it helps your business

You become one of the sources an AI answer cites

Nearly nine in ten of the AI summaries Pew studied cited three or more sources. Google says its AI features run on the same ranking and quality systems as search, so an answer-first page with a real point of view is your way in.

Your listings stop telling people the wrong thing

The category that is too broad. The profile that looks closed. The number that rings to a voicemail nobody checks. The service area that leaves out the town you work in every day. Cheapest revenue on the page.

You can see what you paid for

Monthly numbers from a tool you can open yourself, any time, with or without us. If a provider will not give you Search Console access, that is your answer.

Proof

Google's guide to AI features in Search says optimizing for AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO, and that pages made for every fan-out query breach its scaled content abuse policy. https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide

Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025, tracked 900 US adults across 68,879 searches: with an AI summary on the page, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits against 15% without one, and 1% clicked inside the summary. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/

A Search Engine Land report on a Whitespark analysis of 1.8 million Google Business Profiles found a specific primary category associated with about 36% higher top-10 presence than a generic one, with the study's own correlation caveat. https://searchengineland.com/google-business-profiles-local-seo-success-data-485727

An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlating 0.66 to 0.71 with AI visibility, YouTube mentions around 0.737, and content volume around 0.194. Correlation, not causation, from a tool vendor. https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-brand-visibility-correlations/

FAQ

FAQ

An SEO company already burned me. Why would this be different?

It might not be, and assume the industry earned your suspicion. What changes the bet is what you can verify: Search Console and your Google Business Profile in your own name, a monthly report in plain English, and a list of changes you can point at on your own site. If we stop tomorrow, the pages stay yours.

How long until I see anything?

Longer than anyone wants. Ahrefs polled 3,680 practitioners and the typical answer was three to six months, with their own caveat that beating established brands takes longer. Profile work moves in weeks and rankings move over quarters. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is selling a number, as one competitor's own page puts it.

Do I need llms.txt, special schema, or to write for AI?

No, and be careful with anyone selling it. Google's guidance says you can ignore LLMS.txt files and other special markup, that there is no requirement to chunk content, and that there is no special schema.org markup for generative AI. What matters is useful content, clear structure, a good page experience, and accurate details in your Google Business Profile.

What does SEO cost per month?

Operationalixer publishes no prices, because the honest answer depends on your market and how much work is already done. The figures in circulation are agency packages, one competitor listing a $997-a-month social package as its own published price, plus Reddit comments quoting C$1,500 to $3,500 a month. Those are not benchmarks. We scope the work and itemise it before it starts.
