THE PROBLEM

The problem — in the customer's words

Google Business Profile management is the work of getting one profile verified, filled in, and kept current. The goal is simple. People already searching for what you do in the towns you serve can find you and call. It is editing, not advertising. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Google also says nobody can request or pay for a better local position. The owners who call us already have customers. Referrals and repeat work keep the phone busy. What they miss is the other call: the stranger who typed 'roof repair Barrie' this morning and picked someone else off the map. A service-area business in r/googlebusinessprofile summed it up clearly. 'My GBP is a service based business without a physical location… my business does not show up.' No storefront meant no clean verification. No verification meant no map presence. Another owner in r/GoogleMyBusiness sat in video verification while his listing read 'Permanently closed.' Google was asking for a shopfront he had never had. Others go quiet. An HVAC company asked r/smallbusiness 'Why am I getting no calls?' and got 108 replies. The useful replies were blunt: 'Google reviews matter the most.' 'Do you have a Google profile? If not, get one yesterday.' One owner had already paid for help and wrote, 'SEO is giant scam and ripoff.' Then comes the invoice. 'It's been 5 months, not a single call.' Another owner on r/localseo paid $1,750 a month for two pages of content. Most people who reach this page are not naive about agencies. They have already paid one.

HOW IT WORKS

How it works

  1. 01

Step 1 — Work out which profile is actually yours

Duplicates and old listings are common. The one you think you own is sometimes a second profile Google created. We find the live one, claim it, and tell you if verification means filming a walkthrough of your shop or tools.

  2. 02

Step 2 — Pick the primary category like it's the whole job

It nearly is. In Whitespark's study of 1.8 million profiles, a specific primary category tracked 12.5% top-10 presence against 9.2% for a generic one. We choose it by what customers type, then fill the services and attributes to match.

  3. 03

Step 3 — Fill in every field, then photograph the work

Hours, holiday hours, service areas, service descriptions, attributes, and a plain-language description all get completed. Then we use real job photos, not stock. The median profile carries 11 photos, so the bar is your closest competitors.

  4. 04

Step 4 — Build a review habit inside Google's rules

The request goes after each job and to every customer, not only the happy ones. Google prohibits paid reviews and prohibits asking only satisfied customers. Every review gets a fresh answer in your voice within a day or two.

  5. 05

Step 5 — Keep it current and clean up your details

Posts are not a ranking factor. Still, a profile untouched since 2019 reads like a closed business. We publish weekly or monthly and fix name, address, and phone details that make Google unsure whether you are real.

  6. 06

Step 6 — Report the numbers, including the flat ones

You get views, calls, direction requests, and website clicks from the Performance tab, month over month. You also get what we changed and why. If a change did nothing, that goes in the report.

Proof

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. It found 47% will not use one with fewer than 20. https://www.brightlocal.com/learn/local-consumer-review-survey/

Google's own local ranking documentation says ranking runs on relevance, distance and prominence. It also says there is 'no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.' https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091

Google's prohibited content policy bans paid or incentivised reviews. It also bans asking only your happy customers. https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177

Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey is scored by practitioners rather than run as a controlled study. It puts Primary GBP Category at 227, Proximity at 225 and business-title keywords at 223. https://whitespark.ca/local-search-ranking-factors/

Whitespark's 1.8 million-profile study was written up by Search Engine Land. It found completeness moving from 0 to 5 improves average rank by roughly 19 positions. It also found top-10 presence triples from 4% to 13%. The study states correlation, not causation, and that caveat travels with the number. https://searchengineland.com/google-business-profiles-local-seo-success-data-485727

BrightLocal's GMB insights study measured where profile attention goes. The local pack takes 32% of clicks without Local Services Ads. It found 5% of profile views become a website click, a call or a directions request. The same study found a median of 11 photos per profile. https://www.brightlocal.com/research/google-my-business-insights-study/

LocaliQ's 2025 home-services benchmarks come from LocaliQ's own client accounts, not an independent panel. They put average cost per click at $7.85, electricians at $12.18 and plumbing at $10.49. https://localiq.com/blog/home-services-search-advertising-benchmarks/

FAQ

FAQ

I don't have a storefront. Can I even get on the map?

Yes, as a service-area business, with your address hidden and service areas defined. Be clear-eyed about the limit. Whitespark scores 'physical address in city of search' at 213 points and proximity at 225. You cannot buy or move proximity. You can rank across your service area. You will not out-rank a well-run competitor two streets from the searcher.

Google rejected my verification video and now my listing says "Permanently closed." Can you fix that?

It is the hardest case we take. Video verification can ask for a shopfront a service-area business does not have. We rebuild the profile correctly, document it against Google's guidelines, file the appeal, and handle the back-and-forth. We cannot promise a timeline. Some reinstatements take days, and some take weeks.

Do Google Business Profile posts actually do anything for ranking?

No. Posts are not among Google's three local signals. The practitioner consensus is that they act as a freshness signal with an indirect effect at best. We publish them because a customer comparing three profiles sees that yours is current. A profile last posted in 2019 reads like a business that shut down.

How much does Google Business Profile management cost?

We do not publish prices. Talk to us and you will get a number for your situation. For context, other companies in this market publish $299 to $799 a month for profile tiers. One advertises 'starting at $400/mo per location.' Those are their prices, not a market rate. Ask whether categories, review responses, citations, and reporting are included.

What if I already have an agency doing this?

Ask them two questions before you call us: which exact primary category is on my profile, and what were my calls and direction requests last month? If they cannot answer, you may be paying for posts rather than management. If their work is genuinely good, the honest advice is to keep them.
